The Beauty of the Clean Break: The Misguided Logic Behind the Crossover

It seems time is about up for the Llanview Three, as they're called, and I couldn't be happier. As sad as that may seem, I can't wait for them all to exit- stage left, stage right, don't matter.  Just get them out and Llanview-bound. This is an open note to PP.

Give us our characters back for reals and forever. Crossovers are not a good idea and will not function as some surmise. They will fail and not only cause dissension in the ranks of fans on both sides, but water down the brand. Stop this before it starts, Guys, it's a bad idea.

It's often true that corporate types think their logic is correct. It may seem correct. It may work in some venues. But that logic isn't absolute. You need to know your market and study it qualitatively, not just quantitatively. You need to actually hear what your consumers have to say and see how they feel before you make assumptions about how they feel about your product.

Here's an example. I live in Chicago and can attest to our dedication to certain brands and tradenames. We're loyal to a fault. We have to be. We have the Cubs and the Bears afterall. Michael Jordan could spit in our face and we'd justify it as he was kidding. We had one family run our town for decades even though we know it maybe wasn't the best idea. They were our Daleys,  damnit, and that was that.

When Macy's bought what was left of the Marshall Fields brand, they decided to change the name of the long loved store.  I have a very close friend who's a lawyer in San Francisco. She knows some bigwig in marketing at Macys. Knowing my friend was a native Chicagoan, he called her and asked her opinion about the name change. Her answer? "It's a disaster. Don't do it. It's a massive mistake".  The marketing guy said his numbers said otherwise. She said, "You don't know Chicagoans. This is a massive mistake".

And it was. And is. People still actively boycott the store. They hate hate hate Macy's. There are still protests to get the name back. Finally, the CEO of Macy's had to come out and tell Chicago to "get over it".  We never did. Macy's sucks and their numbers in Chicago prove that.

Macy's took a century of good will and tossed it. They took a brand and watered it down as they still sold Frangos and kept a moment or two of Fields. But it's not the same. Having a little of what we loved makes it worse than having nothing at all. Numbers don't show attitudes. Logic isn't always controlling in taste and loyalty. Err on the side of caution when consumer choices are clouded with nostalgia and memory and family.

This is for you guys at PP. Read that line above again. Soap opera is all about nostalgia, family, memory, and love. Don't think you can use characters as marketing. That's not going to work. They aren't pawns in that way. They need to be centered and grounded. They can't run willy-nilly from place to place. People will not be invested in them.

THIS IS A BAD IDEA!! We need to get invested in a story or we don't care. The audience isn't invested in the character. They're invested in the relationships with other characters. You should have learned that from watching this crap with OLTL characters on GH. The majority of the OLTL audience did not watch or left pretty quickly. It wasn't my show so why would I watch?

Look, I was a huge fan of Howarth's interpretation of Todd. But I quickly found that I was only interested in him in Llanview. I not only didn't like him in Port Charles, I disliked him. I turned it off and avoided the show because of it. I would have liked to have seen Anna and Duke and Scotty and Lucy and Frisco and Felicia. But the show had the stink of the loser all over them and Todd made it worse. Don't get me started on Starr.

This will happen with the GH fans you think may come over to OLTL after any brief crossover. It will not work. It's about them liking Todd on GH, not following him back to OLTL. They'll be pissed as these are two different characters. On GH, he's whatever he was with Carly. On OLTL, he's Todd Manning. Different guy.

The shows have different tones and acting styles. They don't mesh. That should prove the point. If they like GH, they may not like OLTL. You've had Todd get new fans for a year. That should be enough. If they follow, it will be now. But having him show up and be whatever for the moment won't make anyone happy. Fans of both shows want their character for themselves. We don't share well.

So, look, this is your show, do what you want. But, like the marketing guy who thought he knew everything, my friend the lawyer knew more than him as she lived it. She knew the consumers. She understand the fan culture. She may not have done studies formally, but she lived it.

I'm doing the same thing now.  Abandon this idea. It's a bad one and it won't work. It will hurt you more than help. It will make me not invest in Todd if he's leaving, no matter how brief. He needs to go home, stay there, and rebuild his life. I'm not interested in him running back, even for a few months. GH fans won't be invested if he will then come back and leave again. This is logic, I get that, but it's faulty.

You're new to soaps. You need to rebuild trust with the audience. We're leery and you need to woo us. Just give us our people back and we're with you. We've been screwed but we're ones who want to believe. Just don't fuck it up.

  1. Just a caveat. Feel free to speak for yourself, but don't presume to speak for other OLTL fans. Further, to present a statement when you have no proof: "...majority of the OLTL audience didn't watch or left pretty quickly", is asking for rebuttal. The ratings disprove this statement. If anyone believes for a moment, that GH's surge in viewership was totally unrelated to OLTL viewers crossing over, that person is deluded.;) Otherwise, interesting blog entry.

    1. Good point. I'll keep that in mind.

    2. I think the ratings boast had a lot to do with bringing back such GH favorites as Anna, Duke, and of course, the charming Robert Scorpio. Also, there was a macabre kind of interest in Faison peeling off his Duke face after it had been drenched with hot cheese fondue. And of course, there were no other soaps on ABC to watch so it follows that many viewers were going to give GH a look see. I know many many OLTL fans, and they tuned into GH to watch Todd and John interact with the GH characters. But most of the OLTL fans I know have since tuned out after watching the dark and nuanced Todd Manning suddenly turn into Howdy Doody. While it was hard to believe that John would turn his back on Natalie and his child, at least his character was not completely altered. Todd was suddenly unrecognizable uttering the same love lorn lines to Carly as he did to Blair without build up or any kind of history. Had Roger been playing a new character, I think he would have been completely acceptable to OLTL viewers. There seems to be collective sentiment that says,'I knew Todd Manning, and I am telling you that man is not Todd Manning!' So yes, at first OLTL fans tuned in to see their OLTL characters cross over, but a majority of the fans I know have since stopped watching after watching Todd turn into Carly's personal clown and handmaiden. It's too painful for many OLTL long time viewers to watch.
Therefore, I don't think it's pure conjecture on Addison's part to assume that a lot of OLTL fans have since tuned out of GH.

    3. Do you mean Toddy Doody? Or would it be Tawdy Doody? Not only are you smart, you're so damn funny!!I could see Carly as Buffalo Bob- for more reasons than one...

    5. Kim, yesterday Starr and Michael were discussing Carly and Todd. Michael tells Starr,"My mom broke off her relationship with your dad but I know she still loves him." HUH? Did I blink and the love affair of the century occurred? This "relationship" reminds me of how sixth graders "go" with each other for a day, only to break up the next day. It's kind of cute watching them play pretend girl friend and boy friend because, well, they're 12! But when two middle aged people do it? It's called arrested development. And Todd with the Easter Bunny planting a bug in Carly's house so he can spy on her and AJ, with whom she's pretending to have a relationship? Yes, Carly is pretending to "go" with AJ, her fake "BOYFRIEND!" and it's making her real "BOYFRIEND" jealous. Jesus, I don't have the words. And can someone tell Laura Wright that a woman in her mid forties should refrain from calling the men in her life her BOYFRIENDs! I am sure that is her ad libbing, and she probably thinks it's cute--it's not. Finally, Carly seemed to be trying to impersonate Blair yesterday with all the cute ranting and raving. Carly is not Blair just as Todd is not Todd. This parallel universe is incredibly askew.

  2. Excellent points, Addison. And you can speak for me and for a couple sizeable fan bases I know anytime. While I've been trying to resign myself to the crossovers thinking they'd boost the viewership on both shows, it is more likely they have the capacity to further divide the fan bases. Most of the core OLTL folk I know hate Todd on GH. The Carlyphiles, including LW herself, are all pushing agenda driven posts around the Internet about the great romance. I'm sure they'd push the same posts if she was involved with a shoe. The shoe would fit better anyway.

    1. I did hear the crossovers were not set in stone and there had been some rethinking, so I thought this might help. Thus my more professional tone. No swearing or name calling today! Some of the peeps tweeted it to those who count- the PP bigwigs.

Can't hurt. I'd say Carly's more the old lady who lives in the shoe. But I'd be happy to put it in her ass.

  3. " There seems to be collective sentiment that says,'I knew Todd Manning, and I am telling you that man is not Todd Manning!' " Right on, Harry. It's character into caricature. Toddlite - good for slurping noodles and sticking chopsticks up his nose.

  4. Suddenly, Todd Manning is now Dan Quayle. And since when do rants have to adhere to the facts? I thought the very nature of rants was to over generalize. For instance, after being cut off the other day by a Mercedes SUV, I said to my friend, 'All people who drive Mercedes SUV's are self-entitled assholes.' My friend, who was in the passenger seat, told me I can't generalize like that, and I don't know for a fact that all people who drive Mercedes SUV's are self-entitled assholes. Yes, I do. It's my car, it's my rant--you would rant too if it happened to you.'

  5. The thing is characters like todd need to be tied to people we love and family connections to keep them rootable. The thing that keeps todd rootable in lanview was viki blair and his relationship with his children. What makes him rootable in port charles nothing so he has become a disgusting unrootable character that is like a new character and we know what happens to most new characters who join a show with no ties or sensible or rootable story. THEY ARE KILLED OFF OR SHIPPED OFF SCREEN ...

eg. joe scully trey diego johnny dorman and other people who name we do not even remember or care to remember

johnny i loved but with no family ties or relationships that made him human he ran out of story and ran off screen

todd is running out of story now exactly what is todd story now CARLY OH HOW EXCITING WHO WANTS TO WATCH A STORY OF JUST CARLY I HATE HER i rather watch todd in story with a chair if they wanted todd in gh they should of gave him pc family like the quartermaines not stick to carly
todd family is in lanview where he should be
it todd's interactions with vicki blair jack sam that make todd tolerable and watchable

it viki blair and jack i love and their interaction with him is what makes him better they would had more success with integrating viki than todd but they did not really want todd they watched an episode of ron's todd twitching like rex or imitating blair being a clown and that who they wanted. This funny part is a part of todd but is not all the components or todd. They have turned todd into a one dimensional character like daffy duck or elmer fudd who says and does the same thing
such a shame really -- I am counting the days until todd is out of port charles and back in lanview where he belongs
