The End of the Road: GH Fans Have Their Say as They Walk Away

It's become readily apparent that daytime broadcast television producers have lost touch with their fans. I know, the fans shouldn't be running the shows. That's true. But the idea here is that they need to attract a fanbase, not repel them. The "producers" of GH are doing just that. Instead of railing and bitching as I usually do, I've decided to let the fans speak for themselves as it appears no one else is listening.

Below are some of the fan responses I've found. I can't post them all as there are too many for anyone to count. Now there are some who are pleased but that's not the focus here. And looking at the ratings, that number is getting smaller and smaller everyday. But I'm allowing a forum for those who aren't heard. Those who are blocked or degraded or ignored.

The hatred and anger and sadness and disgust is overwhelming. They blame the producers and, in the words of the "illustrious" head writer, they're just "haters". I would argue that's not the case at all. They love their show. They hate what's being done to it. And they're willing to walk away rather than see it go even lower than it has.

I can't start with the massive amount of Sabrina hate. There's too much. It's, well, a lot of hate. I would be here copying and pasting all month. However, the grand return of Howarth is rivaling it. It's newer, so it's easier to document. There is as much vehemence, just not as many posts yet. It's only been a few months. But it's getting worse, not better.

These all come from DD in the past few days. It's a daunting task to pick and choose as there's so many. It would be funny, if it weren't kind of sad. All typos and grammar are left in place.

Okay, so the brilliance of Dieter, as I call him, or Franco, or, as DD calls him, the Baboon. I see that not only do they hate the character, some now hate the actor. Move on, Buddy Boy, it's hurting your brand. But, it's up to you. Here's some of the love....only not:
" It's so insulting and unless your a RoHo fangurl this show is the pits. There is no way I can watch that Franco crap anymore. I see Franco's face and I just can't anymore. I just have zero interest in Franco. Such a stupid, stupid casting choice."

"I semi-liked RH at times as Todd, although I thought he was given way too much focus on the show before. But Franco is not a character I can get behind...no matter who is playing him. Franco was a villain. Not an anti-hero...a straight up psycho villain. The vision here is completely lost on me."
"Honestly you really have to think Roger Howarth is the cats meow to think this stuff is any good, what they're doing with this character is so wrong for the show. Will see how long they can keep this up I guess."
"But Roger has been fairly awful with a character that needed to stay dead."
"I really need a Franco free day I can't take it anymore, he is so horrible to watch."
"This gorilla on Let's Make A Deal reminds me of Franco"
"I like Ava. She can stay. Fuck Curious George though, he can ADIOS"
"The stench of baboon shit knocked me out."

"The baboon was still sucking face."
"I think it's enough time. Franco is an unmitigated disaster."

It seems the actors who are throwing themselves onto the bandwagon are also hurting themselves and their brand.  Take Laura Wright who has been throwing herself on Howarth as if he's the last plane leaving Saigon.  And about Wright's over the top promotion of a pairing with Howarth, well, let the fans speak:

"It sickens me to know that Laura has no sensitivity chip at all.
No bashing her but as an actress, you'd think she'd want her character
improved instead of looking more stupid.
I never thought i'd ever wish for Sarah or Tamara to come back till now.
They are the two actresses that spoke up about their characters and wanted
better for them, not worse"
"I truly believe that LW is in for a rude awakening in reguards to Carly and Franco being accepted. I dont care what Ron rewrote, Franco was involved in Micheal's rape, my God the guys a serial killer outside of what he did in port Charles."
"she's crazy if she thinks this viewer wants or will support that shit"
"She is delusional if she thinks the Franco thing is inspired. It is a big reason people finally bailed. It is killing the show right now (along with a lot of other things)"
"LW making her case in subtle way that she and RH will be paired. Her analogy was Luke raped Laura. Well this shows her lack of intelligence, that is completely differently situation. It was Lauras will to fall in love and marry Luke. Franco did not intentionally order Michael to be rape, however, his actions talking to Carter exploited michael to a predator therefore Michael was raped. There is no justification if Carly ever falls in love with Franco, and forgets what happens to her own damn child. That wit will be clearly the most despicable act on any soap in this history of soaps. A mother hooks up with the man that exploited her child to be brutally raped. LW did not think it through that way, she's so gung ho about RH and is desperate to be front and center because she knows hes' priority and a Liver.

If they want to hook Franco up with someone, even though he's vile, the way to go is for him to hook up with someone whose child was not rape because of him. This is many different women on GH- but LW is a pet and a clear asslicker of RC she thinks it's a privileged to be able to have the pairing.

And no matter how the writers spin it, no woman on the planet would be with the man who caused the rape of her teenage son. Total disgusting way to go."
And the feelings about TPTB? OY Vey:

"Anyways lothe gh these days but love these old 82 clips"
"It probably won't happen but the only other thing is someone slaps their hands at ABC and tells them to start refocusing the show to reflect the long term GH characters and lessen the hold on the livers and newbies. Otherwise I can't forsee I'll ever watch GH again. RC/FV have gutted the look and feel of GH because they couldn't let OLTL go"
"I just think FV/RC are super spiteful of GH legacy characters, no matter how much they try to claim otherwise."
" RC is disrespectful in every way to fans and now to the editor of a soap mag. Can't believe it ... seems like RC's boss should step in and silence this twitter stuff NOW.

Let's face it: RC is so blinded by his Liver pets, he'll NEVER understand the issue, even with the sinking ratings. So when RC gets yet another soap canceled, if he needs to find a reason, all he'll need to do is look in a mirror."
" watching Gh is now more of a chore than entertainment. I watch now mostly out of habit. I have no emotional attachment to anything on the screen. There is no heart. I don't recognize the show at all either physically on screen or emotionally"
"The blantant front and center of OLTL actors/actresses is offensive to this GH fan."
"But you can compare other times when the same actor returns to the same show in a different role. It almost never works. To do it with three at the same time, who have just been on the show five minutes earlier in different roles was bound to fail. Add to that making one of them a rewritten serial killer and I don't know how Ron even thought that it would work. Correct that. I do know how. Pure arrogance and someone that started to believe his own press"
"Soap fans know them as who they 1st came on as and from their other soap.
If they couldn't bring them back as who they were to fans then it isn't and won't work. That's a whoooole new level of arrogance to that think fans would really eat whatever and not even disguise it"
"I am not defending him, by no means, I think he's a horrible writer, but often times creative types create for themselves, what make them feel good. Their work comes from a more emotional place. It's much easier to reason with a more analytical type person, because facts and figures are easily understood and accepted and negotiated. I don't think Ron is capable of understanding what people are saying."

And the result- apathy and moving on:

"It is so sad to see what has become of this show. Newbies and Livers own it and what is left of the vets have become different characters to prop the aforementioned. I could cry"
"I've become so detached from the show itself. I used to care about the show whether or not I was watching but I just don't anymore."
"I selfishly never wanted my fave to leave. Now, I really wish they would because I see no light at the end of the tunnel...except for an oncoming train of poop. They can leave and come back the last two weeks for their HEA."
"It is painfully obvious that they dont "get" GH or the characters and would more than likely damage Robert if he he came back even more. i pray that they leave Jason DEAD even if SBu would return(which i know he won't and dont blame him) but I want the characters I love to escape the pen of Ron and vision of Frank. I really want some of my other favs to leave honestly, which is so sad and just shows how much i truly HATE the writing and direction of GH now. "
"I could care less about the show anymore. I turned if off months ago when the one character that I was still entertained by became a shell of his former self and only lived to prop a newbie."
"The sad thing for me is that I think we're stuck with Cartini till the end. ABC won't bother to make another regime change. So it's either support this bullshit or root for cancellation. I want better choices. "
" You can only look away from the disaster that GH has turned into with those three characters for so long."
And the saddest of all:
"I also dont think too many people would be fighting for their favs to stay on Gh."
The only thing daytime has is it's legacy of long term fans and their dedication. Unfortunately, GH has squandered that and, by doing so, it is no longer relevant or even GH. It's a morass of egos circling the drain of ratings. When I told Valentini to "Burn the Mother Down", I had no idea he would take me literally.

But he did. These people aren't haters. They're the opposite. Yet, as usual, no one in control over there will hear it. Too bad. That show was once something.

I once thought at least Howarth would walk away unscathed. Now, I'm not so sure. I've been watching these fans for about twenty years and I've never seen something this bad. It's a new low.

The stink of the loser, Buddy, the stink of the loser.  The Baboon comments aren't about Franco. They're about you.

  1. There is probably more people that don't post on DD. Most of my collegues who are well educated business executives in my large corporation and my kids university friends, my parents friends have found something better to do during the hour GH is on. And all these people have one thing in common they agree GH is shit. They turned it on DVR it etc saw the Franco monkey crap and turned it off and found something more productive to do with thei time. Over half do not go on twitter they did not have time. One even said and I quote "Thanks Ron I can spend more time with my daughter and away from TV. You made that possible with the shit you are producing. They are well educated and are smart enough to know when they are being fed crap. And who would eat crap. Laura Wright that who in fact she wants it. She craves for it. Ron are you trying to promote a TV free life. COngradulations. However at least OLTL is keeping me tuned in. So while we can do without GH, we all agree OLTL is much see TV and Dallas. We work our schedules around them. I get up 2:30am every morning to download OLTL from I tunes because I love that show. OLTL is now going to be on OWN by Oprah that huge, and Ron is not a part of it. OH HAPPY DAY .... OH HAPPY DAY... I guess she knows a great show when she sees it too.

    1. DD's just one. There are too many resources to count. But as it's an anon board, you tend to get some really honest answers. I know they're mean but I am, too! Yet this time, they're right.

  2. I am amazed at this post. It's very well done, to the point, and is just clear and effective. Kudos to you for pointing out what's happening to the LOVERS. They are not, as we OLTLers are not, HATERS at all, they are LOVERS of soaps/characters/shows/traditions that are being decimated and ruined.

  3. With only four soaps left on regular TV I was hoping and praying this wouldn't happen I saw the transitions of regimes over my decades of watching soaps and know the ropes. But this is something I don't think I've ever seen before.

The overt disregard of GH (fans first) their favorites/ vets who have been reduced to supporting three characters and newbies who get more focus and family than a character who has held it down in the trenches for 17 years. I to this day do not know who her mom is. All these new characters should be supporting them.

I can go on and on but what hurts the most is to see a beloved character who started this show at age 7 storyline not up/front center but being told parallel to a story about the demise of a boyfriend and a child I did not know.

All the beats played in Starr's story while Robin a veteran who was in an iconic storyline from iconic parents get the bum's rush. The Nurses Ball was devoted to a newbie from nowhere giving this Robin fan the finger.

I was "literally" jumping up and down with glee when Carlivati & Valentini's regime took over but from the very beginning the show became all about marketing his characters from another show to brand this a show I've watched for over three decades. And I had to watch them reducing GH characters to supporting roles...

What did I expect? Not the leashing method of storytelling, plopping characters in story and visually training me to accept them in pairing driven storylines. The airtime Sabrina got/gets (like Dante before her and I complained about him too) leading in eppy counts, Todd now Franco leading in eppy counts..while my characters are on seconds and usually dialoging about Sabrina or Franco

While the newbies get to ramble on and on usually about the same thing they rambled on and on about before.

I thought with the genre on life-support they'd be about something original a fresher look at storytelling e.g. women driving their own storylines not just attached to a cajones,

I was expecting something groundbreaking, different, since they are young I thought they would redefine the genre by stepping outside the lines...but it hasn't happened.

In fact, its the good ole' boys network in full play the same stale execution of old storylines, reconning and rearranging GH history and pushing out GH characters so they can make money for the characters they create... I'm thoroughly disappointed.

  4. Cyber above said it All. I watched GH with my mom and saw the legacy character Robin grow up. Her death was a travesty and they have used fans love of her character to keep viewers tuning in to the show and the Nurse Ball. The return of great vets like Frisco, Robert, Duke has been handled horribly, with no story really and just shameless promotion to get people to watch newbies and livers. Bait and Switch with the best of them. It's is a crime what they have done to this show, which survived and thrived for 50 years. Stopped taping when I realize Nurses ball was a farce.

  5. This coming from a diehard OLTL fan who couldn't let go of OLTL, watched GH and AMC on and off for years, and upon the dual cancellation of OLTL/AMC, tuned back into GH religiously for the crossover characters:

    1) I just want to say first and foremost, I absolutely love this genre. I want to see it do well. I root for all the soaps.

    2) I'm so thankful to Ron and Frank for bringing over Todd, Starr, John and Blair and Tea (even though briefly). It was such a difficult time when OLTL was canceled. It was a difficult thing to come to terms with. To be honest, I never came to terms with the OLTL cancellation because of the crossover characters-- I always thought ABC might reconsider (at least on cable maybe). I will always appreciate that year we got to see OLTL live on, even when it wasn't on.

    3) That all being said, I can't say that I've liked the way the crossover characters were treated in terms of storylines on GH. But what was, was. Now OLTL is back.

    4) I think Ron and Frank really managed to breathe life back into GH for a while there. The 50th Anniv/Nurse's Ball were the high points, obviously.

    5) I absolutely cannot stand the "new" characters that Roger, Kristen and Michael portray on GH. I wish they'd all just come back to OLTL, full time. Silas is a joke. Franco is a joke. Kiki is boring and nothing special.

    6) I feel like I desperately pine for Ron and Frank to return to OLTL so they can fix the show. It really isn't the same. And let's be honest, I think they miss OLTL. I think that's their show. And there's nothing wrong with that... I just wish they'd come home, so to speak. And I wish that GH could get a headwriter and exec producer who have a history with the show-- from the glory days.

    1. HI Daytime,

It's unfortunate that you're not enjoying OLTL. I think it's better than it's been in at least a decade. But it's all a matter of perspective. I think GH's loss is OLTL's gain. Not a Craptini fan. I hope you find something that works for you. Maybe it will be more to your liking in the future. With all the legal issues and bad blood, I truly doubt you'll see those two working on OLTL again. Yet I suppose you never know.

  6. Well said Daytime Drama and I totally agree with your post. I don't watch GH anymore. Now it is the new and unimproved OLTL. This new OLTL is so unwatchable and boring. Tuned in when they came back in May but tuned right back out one week later. They expect me to accept that Franco is not the evil, twisted, murderous, rapist, and psycho/sociopath that he once was. Now he is older, blond, bad hair style, Todd acting, saint. Never going to happen. I want GH back pronto.

  7. You know this is kind of how I felt by the end of OLTL. Truthfully. RC and FV were so focused on newbies and certain actors, screwing over the vets. Dear God, how many times did I read a interview from RC or FV saying we are going to see a huge story with the vets and it amounted to 10 minutes for the whole damn month.
I empathize with GH fans, I've been there. But now I got my new OLTL and sure there are few things I don't care for, but I watch every episode and enjoyed almost all of it. It doesn't feel like the chore ABC's OLTL did at the end. Much happier without either one of those idiots being near my show.

    ReplyDelete
  8. D, it's fascinating how twisted RC and FV have become. Truly, they should donate their brains to science, preferably this week. I'm sure science would love to delve into the inner workings of these sick and deranged minds. They both did stellar work on OLTL, with certain lapses. So how could two wonder boys with such talent and creativity devolve into these two idiots. The megalomania, delusion, pure unmitigated narcissism on display--it's the Todd Manning Syndrome in all its glory. How long until they pretend they have DID when the GH fans show up at their door with torches and pitchforks, now that the Bride of Frank'n'Ron has run amok. That's the least they can have after insulting the GH fans with the gimmicky, sickening simultaneously combusting debut of the Three Horsemen of the Soapocalypse. Soap fans' loyalty is a resilient thing, and it's tested time and time again on suspension of disbelief. We are called upon to buy into all sorts of crazy crap, but asking us to believe that three actors are playing new folks in one day? That's a big finger in the face of everyone who loves this show. I'm not a GH fan, but I don't want any soap to go down like this. It's really pathetic and the GH fans don't deserve to be treated with such blatant disrespect.

    1. Dude, Carlivati is totally losing his shit on Twitter right now. I guess the heat is on...and not in a good way! He can't seem to handle everyone hating on him. He wouldn't last two minutes on Rate Your Professor.com! LOL!!

  9. D, poor Ronnie Boy! I've read some of those tweets...crazy ass stuff! Some blogger was alluding to something he said after he lost at the Emmys, some sour-grapes stuff, but I can't track down what happened. Do you know?! LOL

  10. Okay the psychical mocking of a character in relation to a baboon is probably why, no one will take your comment seriously. RoHo is not your ho and your the pimp, he's not your monkey and you the master, all these characters and writers and producers trying to create at a continuous pace, whill trying to rivive it from the shit it was 2-3 years ago. Let's not forget that, but so many of you "fans" have. And they did revive it for a portion. When the three OLTL actors left then came back as different characters, do your homework that was a network decision. Frank and what's his name had nothing to do with that. They made the best of it, or tried to, with the actors. Yes the show sucks, just plainly, right now. But offer up some suggestions with your bashing. It's been a long thorn of mine that they brought todd, but didn't bring blair, and sooooooooo many fans wanted that. For them to team up and to go opposite against carly and sonny. They didn't need to break up, then get back together to do that. It would have been fresh. The problem is, yes I agree, they do not listen to the fans and what they want. They have some defensive positions or attitude when loving fans are honest. In general it's sad.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I don't see any reason for anyone to offer suggestions with their bashing, because Craptini don't listen. Worse, if you were a fan of GH before they came on, they don't care.

The thing I have resented from the very start of this regime is how these two idiots were treated by the soap press, and soap site owners, like the second coming. I knew they were a disaster in the making for GH, because I had seen what they did to OLTL. Why didn't the soap press criticize them for putting Todd and Starr in lead roles on GH? Where was the uproar over changing the entire tone of the show? Had the press done their jobs instead of all acting like fan girls, maybe Frank and Ron would have reigned in their egos and done what was best for GH. Even many of the GH message boards started banning GH fans for voicing their outrage. My point is, the soap press should have been doing it too, and not leaving it all up to the fans of GH.

I help run a message board for the soaps. The GH board was always the most lively board, with the most posters, but not anymore. Now there's very few who post about the show, because there are very few still watching it. I watched GH almost every day, either live or recorded, for 42 years without stopping; until last year. Now, ABC would have to send me a hefty paycheck every week to get me to watch GH.

Thank you Addison for this blog, and for speaking the truth for many of us ex-GH fans.

    1. Your welcome, Didja. I hope your board picks up. I see that happening everywhere with GH. Maybe when ABC bites the bullet, cancels, and PP picks it up, they improve it and traffic will build again.

And loved seeing the scenes between HBS and RS...dueling divas and the sparks were a flyin. Jeffrey and Destiny are sweet together. Natalie and Clint...what scenes! Tears!!!!

  13. I saw a comment in SID mag that said something like RH is boring as Todd on OLTL and is more exciting as Franco on GH. And, on top of that, the RH Fangurls on some chat boards have their undies in a bunch over the beating that Sonny ordered on Franco and now are hating on Shawn for applying said beating. What universe to these people live on anyway??

    ReplyDelete
  14. RH's Franco is an embarrassment to this show. I'm not totally blaming the actor, but from the small amount I've seen, he's really hamming it up. The entire situation is offensive--the writing, acting and directing are completely inept and misguided. The treatment of this character is way out of bounds of good taste. He was a killer and rapist, no matter what the absurd revisionism forces down the GH fans' throats.

    ReplyDelete
  15. In his desperate attempt to find absolution and redemption for Franco, Ron throws a GH veteran (Sonny) under the bus in order to achieve it. Yes, we all know Sonny isn't a good man, but his character has come to terms with his anger issues, his abusive childhood, and more importantly, his bipolar disease. Sonny being responsible for Franco being beaten to a bloody pulp is designed to make Franco look sympathetic and Sonny extra heinous by comparison. Ron is desperately trying to make Roger fit into a peg only James Franco could fit into and will sacrifice character and storyline in order to do so. It's becoming clear that it really isn't Franco's redemption Ron is seeking, but rather his own.
